Tragic loss, like what happened in Newtown, causes predictable damage to our sense of self, but damage that can be the cause of our transformation and growth. Using an example from work done in New York City after 9/11 at the request of the Mayor's Office, we explore the four major ways our suffering, if left unattended, can destroy our sense of self and the healthy way this process can be resolved in the growth of our "Compassionate Identity."

I grew up in Wilmette, right next door to Highland Park, IL. When the shooting happened in Highland Park, I spoke to my sister who lived there for many years and a number of friends. They put me in touch with the Director of the Highland park Arts Center. This episode is from a a video letter I sent to the Board of the Arts Center a few days after the tragedy in Highland Park. It offers insights from the experience in Newtown to help those in Highland Park, and now any trauamtized community.
